The aryl hydrocarbon receptor interacting protein (AIP) founder mutation R304* (or p.R304* ; NM_003977.3:c.910C>T, p.Arg304Ter) identified in Northern Ireland (NI) predisposes to acromegaly/gigantism; its population health impact remains unexplored. We measured R304* carrier frequency in 936 Mid Ulster, 1,000 Greater Belfast (both in NI) and 2,094 Republic of Ireland (ROI) volunteers and in 116 NI or ROI acromegaly/gigantism patients. Carrier frequencies were 0.0064 in Mid Ulster (95%CI = 0.0027-0.013; P = 0.0005 vs. ROI), 0.001 in Greater Belfast (0.00011-0.0047) and zero in ROI (0-0.0014). R304* prevalence was elevated in acromegaly/gigantism patients in NI (11/87, 12.6%, P < 0.05), but n…
An International Atherosclerosis Society Position Paper: global recommendations for the management of dyslipidemia.
2014
An international panel of the International Atherosclerosis Society has developed a new set of recommendations for management of dyslipidemia. The panel identifies non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) as the major atherogenic lipoprotein. Primary and secondary prevention are considered separately. Optimal levels for atherogenic lipoproteins are derived for the two forms of prevention. For primary prevention, the recommendations emphasize lifestyle therapies to reduce atherogenic lipoproteins; drug therapy is reserved for higher risk subjects. Risk assessment is based on estimation of lifetime risk according to differences in baseline population risk in different nations or r…
Identifying gene-environment interactions in schizophrenia: contemporary challenges for integrated, large-scale investigations
2014
European Community Recent years have seen considerable progress in epidemiological and molecular genetic research into environmental and genetic factors in schizophrenia, but methodological uncertainties remain with regard to validating environmental exposures, and the population risk conferred by individual molecular genetic variants is small. There are now also a limited number of studies that have investigated molecular genetic candidate gene-environment interactions (G x E), however, so far, thorough replication of findings is rare and G x E research still faces several conceptual and methodological challenges. in this article, we aim to review these recent developments and illustrate h…
276 Evaluation of cardiovascular risk and factors associated to risk under-evaluation in general practice
2011
Correlation between perceived cardiovascular risk (CVR) by physicians and real CVR is poorly known. Moreover, the underlying question of factors associated to risk misevaluation, especially for patients at high CVR and that could benefit of a lipid lowering therapy (LLT), remains unsolved. Objective and methodology This was an on-line non-interventional study conducted on a sample of 619 general practitioners. The aim was to describe the relation between physicians evaluated CVR and calculated CVR according to risk's scales. All consulting patients’ aged50 years old (YO) were included. Physicians had to complete a questionnaire and to assess patient's CVR on a 3 level scale (low, medium, an…
